A quick history recap of Gareth Evans & André van Berlo
Many things in life come to us unexpectedly. The creation of “What If” and my friendship with Gareth Evans of Goliath Guitar Tutorials are great examples of that. So really the story begins in 2013 I think where I had my first contact with Gareth. If I remember correctly I commented on one of his videos and he sent an email or personal message back: He wanted to see if we could do something together. Funny enough he had been thinking of that for a while and took my comment as a sign to take action which he did. At the time he was already quite successful but not to the extend he is now. I think he passed 60K subscribers then, while 2 years later his channel is well over 300.000 subscribers strong!
In any case, we did some collaborations on each others channels and contacted regularly. Then in the summer of 2014 I mentioned he should record (properly) one of his arrangements. As he didn’t really have much options in his region I invited him to come to my place and record some here at another friends (Robert Schmidt) studio. He didn’t think long about that and during his stay he recorded “Get Lucky” and we wrote and recorded our first duet “Brotherhood among friends” together.
The writing process went so smoothly that you’d almost wonder if it would be possible to repeat such a thing so we got together again in the fall during my visit at his place. At that point we were also organising the Acoustic Guitar Event in Dordrecht. During my stay we wrote and recorded “A New Dawn” though we didn’t release it until December 31st. “A New Dawn” was the assurance that it wasn’t just a one off thing: When we get together to write, nice things happen!
So in February 2015 we held the Acoustic Guitar Event in Dordrecht and right after it Gareth and I booked the “Session Sound” studio in Rosmalen which is run and owned by sound engineer and guitarist Hennie Korsten. We had set a goal to record “Brotherhood among friends”, “A New Dawn”, “Heading West”, and hopefully write another song in the process.
‘What If’ How the song came to be…
Andre – ‘During our first studio day we recorded all 3 songs we had prepared and we still had 2 days of studio time left. We needed an extra song or we’d be picking our noses the next day. Gareth had some material we could use as the foundation for a new song so that night we sat down to make it happen.
Quickly I had a percussive rhythm I couldn’t let go of and also a few ideas for how to build up the song. We both felt there was real potential but we couldn’t connect the parts and until we did we’d have nothing for the next recording day.
Then we tried out an idea I had where we’d switch percussion from me to Gareth and like magic the whole song suddenly came together. I can’t fully explain the feeling but there was happiness, adrenaline, an uplifting energy knowing we had “gold” in our hands and we would have a very interesting recording day ahead of us. Approximately 2 hours from a basic idea to a great duet that we were both extremely happy about’
Andre – ‘The most special thing about this process is that because the song is so new there is a really fresh vibe that surrounds it. You take it with you into the studio and I believe we’ve captured that vibe quite well. Every time I hear this song I feel that “Eureka moment” we had the night before’
Gareth – ‘I remember taking a break just after we finished writing the song. Both on a high from the process we’d just been through and the, what felt like a, discovery that we’d just made together. The discovery we had made was the revealing of the potential that we had as musicians and partners to create something wonderful. Something we loved and were extremely proud of. Our feelings of wonderment and adoration for the song were exactly the same, and still are to this day. There was a profound elation in the thought that there are others in the world that we know that would certainly love this music as much as we do.’
Gareth – ‘There was a very special mood in the room, hard to encapsulate with mere words. Andre said to me with a smile something along the lines of ‘it makes you think… what if we lived down the road from one another and could do this every day if we wanted?’. I turned to him and said ‘that’s a perfect title for the EP ….What If…’. It seemed to sum up our feelings and that specific moment perfectly. In this way, the title will forever represent to us that very moment in time; the mood that was in the air, the feelings of achievement, inspiration, elation and new discovery. The bond we had built with one another as friends and musicians and our vision and dreams for the future and of how things could be. ‘
Gareth – ‘For me, this sums up the message of the EP and I’m extremely proud that we’re able to share this with the world bound up within our music.’
