I remember the first time I heard “La Catedral” (composed by Agustín Barrios Mangoré). It was in a music store and I was checking out an Al Di Meola cd, I think it was called “Heart of the immigrants”. I had tears in my eyes listening to just the first notes that seemed to come out of thin air. I don’t know why but something deep inside me just resonates whenever I hear and feel this composition. It almost feels like heaven and earth are united through this song within me, a magical feeling…
Over the years “La Catedral” has always been a piece that I would “play someday”. But I tend to work on it and then put it back on the shelf due to a lack of time. Sometimes there’s several years in between me trying the piece again.
Now is no different. We have just moved to Canada and for months I didn’t have my gear except: my classical guitar! So slowly I started trying out classical pieces and of course at some point, this one came up. Again I didn’t have much time so I put it back where I got it.
But so it happens I have a youtube channel and I make tutorials/lessons for how to play guitar. And specifically how to play songs on the guitar. As I had posted some things on instagram people started as for a tutorial for this.
I saw that as an opportunity to finally finish a piece I started about 20 years ago. Even though I haven’t had much time I managed to create an hour of time to record this rendition of La Catedral. I am sure, given time, I will once record my “final version”. Until then, this will be here for those who do the tutorial. This is the first movement: Preludio Saudade. The next movements will be released in time.
Wishing you all a happy and blessed life,
