Carl Verheyen is beyond exceptional! He takes a “bend” to a different level, he evolved it into an art form. That in combination with the beautiful and creative melodic lines he plays, blending different styles like jazz, blues, and country, it all makes for an inspirational and energizing evening.
That same energy and emotion in his playing is carried by a groove that you can feel throughout your body, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. Of course that groove is build by this magnificent trio and lets be honest, with Stuart Hamm on bass what could ever go wrong in that department.
I remember a concert of Joe Satriani(long time ago) where Stuart Hamm had his solo on stage playing the US national anthem in chords which progressed eventually to an amazing country-slap-bass style riff. The entire audience was in awe and dare I say it? It was the highlight of the show! High expectations usually lead to disappointments but not in this case. I can understand why guitarists like Satriani or Verheyen want a man like that by their side. If you want to build a skyscraper you need a solid foundation, the same goes for music. Needles to say he build that foundation together with Jason Harrisson Smith and what a formidable combo that is.
What strikes me as odd though is that Carl is not as known as guitarists like Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford or Steve Lukather and I can’t for the life of me figure out why. Perhaps this is different in the US but I think Carl brings a very broad set of flavours to the table and they make me hungry for much much more. It’s not his technical ability that impresses me but his musicianship, how or forges new lines and walks paths not many other guitarists have treaded before. One thing is certain, I’ve bought a DVD and 3 cd’s to begin with and I’ll be checking him out from now on!
